  • The University of Bergen (UiB) is a young, modern university located in the heart of Bergen.
    The University of Bergen is intricately woven into the geographical, historical and cultural framework of Bergen, with 14,450 students and 3,460 faculty and staff on its campus.

    Most of UiB's faculties, libraries and study halls are located close to Nygårdshøyden in the heart of the city, with a short distance to cafes, sports halls, parks and shops.

    The Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry is located just outside the city centre on Årstadvollen, close to Haukeland University Hospital.

  • Bergen is an international town with small-town charm and atmosphere. The inhabitants love to show off their beautiful and multifaceted city. They are proud of Bergen’s shipping, trading and cultural traditions.
    The city looks over the sea, with mountains in the background and rows of wooden houses perched on the harbour. The natural wonders of this area are unparalleled; Bergen is the gateway to some of the wildest fjords in Norway.

  • Norway’s biggest cultural event—the Bergen International Festival—is held in Bergen every year.

The Student Welfare Organisation in Bergen (SiB) runs the student hostels.
International exchange students intending to stay for a minimum of one semester are guaranteed a single room at one of SiB's student hostels under certain conditions.
For those who need to obtain a residence permit, please be aware that you must make housing arrangements prior to your arrival in Bergen.

Norway has a reciprocal health care agreement with Australia.

Living cost

The average university student budget is approximately NOK 9785 per month. This amount should cover most monthly expenses such as housing, food, clothing, study materials, books, transport and social activities.

Key information

Visa

International exchange students intending to stay in Norway for more than three months must obtain a residence permit for students.
As a general rule, the residence permit should be applied for and granted before you arrive in Norway. Students can apply at the Norwegian consulate/embassy in their home country.
The processing of applications may take 6 -10 weeks so it is recommend that you obtain all the required documents as early as possible. Your required documents include your letter of acceptance, finance documentation, and accommodation documentation. You will find up to date information about the requirements here: UDI's website.
