  • Malmo University was founded in 1998. Located in the centre of Malmo at Universitetsholmen, the university has played a central role in the transformation of Malmo from an industrial town to a centre of learning.

    The open and interactive teaching environment at Malmo University encourages critical thinking, discussions and questions in lectures and seminars. The University is well known for its individual technique on all levels of learning where students are responsible for their own development. 

    The student population of Malmo University is 24,000, which includes more than 1,800 international students from all around the world.

  • Malmo is the commercial centre of southern Sweden and an international city—Malmo has 300,000 residents from approximately 170 different nationalities.
    An exceptionally well developed infrastructure makes Malmo very easy to reach, whatever means of transport you use to get there: boat, plane, train or car. Malmo has an international harbour and the airports Kastrup and Sturup are only a 30-minute journey from the centre of Malmo. Malmo has excellent rail connections with the rest of Sweden and Europe, making it the perfect city for adventurous travellers.

  • The City of Malmo has received many international awards for its focus on sustainable city development and pilot projects such as Augustenborg and the Western Harbour. Malmo was also appointed the first Fairtrade City of Sweden.

There is a general shortage of housing in Malmo, especially in the sector of student accommodation.
Malmo University does not have on-campus accommodation but will help exchange students find alternative housing.

Health insurance

Sweden has a reciprocal health care agreement with Australia.

Living cost

It is recommended that students budget for 9000 SEK per month.

Key information

Visa

You must apply for a “Residence Permit for a visiting student” through the Swedish Embassy or Consulate in your home country before you travel to Sweden. This procedure can take 2 to 3 months so you are advised to start your application as early as possible.
